Heres an interesting
bit of information about staying warm in the
cold outdoors:
Here at Katahdin Gear we build our
products to be suitable for the coldest conditions.
To supplement this, please observe the following
tips:
Food, not clothing, is the source of
your body heat; remember to consume a meal
high in carbohydrates, coupled with some fats,
before heading out on the trail. Bring snacks
that satisfy these conditions as well. Examples
include: Beef, poultry, fish, eggs, corn,
nuts, beans, peanut butter, macaroni &
cheese, vegetables, fruits, cheese, salami
and bacon. Avoid sweets.
Several shirts, a sweater and a jacket
will allow you to adjust your system in many
more ways than will a single heavy coat. Layers
may be taken off or put on depending on your
activity level, outside temperature, wind
and precipitation.
Moisture trapped by the skin can rapidly
decrease your body temperature. To keep dry,
avoid cotton that absorbs moisture; body heat
can drive perspiration through many layers
of breathable cloth and force it out into
the air.
